München (Munich) Part Zwei (Two)

So the story continues.

Last you heard was I went to bed full of pork knuckle and schitzel, now we move on to the next day where a trip to The Residenz and the Treasury inside was on the cards. So wasting no time the wife and I awoke, had a hearty fry up for breakfast and headed back to the Donnersbergerbrücke station. After the short S Bahn ride to Marienplatz we set off for the Residenz building. Arriving slightly before opening time we managed to come up with a plan. First the Treasury, then the Residenz, then a walk and food.

The Entrance to The Residenz and Treasury

Soon the doors swung open and we rushed in to get our tickets. Sure enough we decided on the Treasury first which turned out to be a good plan. Using the free interactive audio guide we wondered around in awe and amazement at the exhibition. In fact it took us almost 2 hours to go around everything, though it could have been longer, as half way through I had decided to only listen to the audio of items that interested me rather than everything we could see. We could have easily stayed another hour in there but wanted a break and we still hadn’t even entered the palace!

The Treasury itself was a magnificent collection of household and religious items ranging from jewel encrusted figures and swords all the way to what some would call the posh plates that only come out when royal guests pop over. Though these posh plates no doubt cost more than the average; certianly more than the posh plates I grew up with!

After a short break we pushed on into the Residenz. The building itself was massive and had rooms full of magnificent artworks, state rooms and halls. In total we spent four hours in the palace exploring the various rooms, halls, chapels and an amazing shell covered area outside in a garth, something I have only ever seen on one other occasion at Eaton Hall, home of the Duke of Westminster, during a charity event in a previous job role.

It was now time for a walk to a cafe and here we made a slight error. The day before we had seen down the road a rather large building which turned out to be Bayerischer Landtag, which is discribed as, ‘The Landtag of Bavaria (State Diet of Bavaria) is the unicameral legislature of the state of Bavaria in Germany’, according to Google Maps. The building looked great from a distance and we had agreed to walk to it to have a closer look. The hope was that we would find a cafe on the way; sadly no such luck. So after over five hours of being on our feet, with little to no rest I dragged the wife another 2 miles to look at a building. When we finally did arrive at a cafe round the corner from Bayerischer Landtag, needless to say the coffee and pastries were on me!

After a well earned rest we endevoured to head back into the centre taking the train from Isartor station straight back to Donnersbergerbrücke. We then rested up before heading out once again for food, again it seemed only right I paid. We agreed on ‘3D’ a sports bar/pub and feasted on pasta and schnitzel, though this time I truly was defeated by the food as two peices of pizza sized schnitzel were presented to me with chips and side salad! The pasta, that the wife had ordered, must have been roughly three British servings – happy wife, happy life, eh?

The pizza sized schitzel!

After our fill we headed round to the hotel and got a good night sleep. The plan for the next day was sadly thwarted. The wife wanted a day of rest so I obviously obliged and told her of my plan to go to Saltzburg. Sadly my phone, with my train ticket on it, decided it didn’t want to play so I was forced to abandon my plan. I instead headed back into Munich centre and tried to wander around places we had not been. One of these places was a bar in a public park, I set up shop and decided to take a day off 195wanderer content gathering and enjoy a few too many in the park. It wasn’t until 6.30pm that I arrived back at the hotel to a bemused wife chuckling at my rather intoxicated ramblings. A great end to a lovely visit to Munich.
